Chills As ‘Massive’ Cougar Spotted Prowling Outside Home in Broad Daylight

A video of a “huge” cougar strolling past a person’s window in the Canadian province of British Columbia has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was posted by @kimdougan123 and has garnered 3.6 million views since it was shared on July 31.
A caption shared with the post reads: “Midday sighting on Vancouver Island.”
The footage, taken through the window of a home, shows a cougar standing beside a tree. The animal is seen walking across a patch of grass, while looking toward the window.
The cougar pauses for a moment, with its gaze fixed on the camera, before looking ahead and trotting across the field. A voice in the clip whispers: “Oh my God, it’s huge.”
Also known as mountain lions, cougars are among the largest and most powerful predators in North America. A large male cougar can be up to eight feet in length and weigh over 200 pounds, notes Nature Conservancy Canada.
According to the B.C. Wildlife Foundation (BCWF), “cougars are the most widespread large carnivore in the Americas, and British Columbia is home to one of the largest and most intact populations of any jurisdiction.”
A December 2023 report on the state of the cougar population in British Columbia stated that “the provincial population is estimated to be 5,000-7,000 animals,” and the BCWF says they are found across most of the southern half of the province but are expanding their range northward.
According to the report, “cougar conflicts with people are common in British Columbia and injuries to people, although far less common, have been increasing over the last century. However, this increase may be at least in part due to better recording,” the BCWF noted.
“Human fatalities are extremely rare,” and the last human fatality caused by a cougar in the province was in the 1990s, the report found.
The cougar sighting in the viral clip stunned users on TikTok.
Bane wrote: “That cat is MASSIVE,” and Ladywendi said: “That’s the biggest mountain lion I’ve ever seen.”
PineConeLake noted: “That’s not even a mountain lion. That’s a straight up lion.”
Nunya said: “What a beautiful but scary cat,” and @randomgirl1989 simply wrote: “Absolutely stunning.”
Lulu 🇨🇦TheCalm said: “Wow How stunning Look at the muscles. He’s healthy yay.”
Mellow yellow noted: “I would NEVER go outside again. You’d find me stuck into the couch, years later.”
