A fantastic, heavy bronze Japanese hanging fish (likely Koi) bell/ chime from the late Edo period. The patina on the piece is superb. It glows in the light. The fish has two top loops for hanging and Japanese kanji characters on each side. This piece is likely late Edo period as later bells were stamped ‘Japan’ on the base in order to be in compliance with the McKinley Tariff. Passed in 1890, this law imposed tariffs on imported items and required that goods be labeled with their country of origin. This particular piece has no maker’s or country's mark so clearly dates before 1890.
