Jean Anna Birkland McCandless passed away peacefully at her home in Los Altos Hills on June 27, at the age of 96. Her paintings and sculptures were widely recognized and exhibited. She had numerous private and public commissions, winning many awards.
Jean was born on a farm in Lewiston, Montana, the fourth of five girls. Her family moved to California in 1924, eventually settling in Berkeley. Jean, an art major, graduated from Louisians State University in 1939. She and four other art students are noted for painting the nationally recognized fresco murals at LSU treasured for their quality and historical significance, depicting depression era industrial and agricultural progress in the south.
