Kashmir
,
in northern-end India.
In the eight century,
Karkota Empire
established themselves as
rulers of Kashmir
. Kashmir grew as an imperial power
under the Karkotas. After demise of Lalitaditya Muktapida, Kashmir's influence over other kingdoms declined and the dynasty
ended in circa
855-856
AD.
Utpala dynasty
founded by Avantivarman followed the Kakrotas. His successor
Shankaravarman
(885-902 AD) led a successful military campaign against Gurjaras inn Punjub.
Political instability
in the 10th century made the
royal body guards (
Tantrins
) very powerful in Kashmir. Under the Tantrins, civil administration collapsed and
chaos reigned
in
Kashmir till they were defeated by
Chakravarman
(923-937 AD).
Queen Didda
, who descended from the Hindu Shahis of Kabul on her mother's side,
took over as the ruler
in second half
of the
10th century
. After her death in 1003, the throne passed to the
Lohara dynasty
.
King Samgrama Deva
is considered as
the founder of Lohara dynasty,
He was able to
repulse several attacks
of Mahmud of Ghazni against Kashmir, and he also supported ruler Trilochanapala against Muslim attacks.
