GENEVA NEW YORK NORMAN KENT NATIONAL BANK WOODCUT PRINT CALENDAR 1953

Description

On the auction block we present this very rare print made from a Norman Kent woodcut created in Geneva, NY.  Mr. Kent was an artist known for his woodcuts and linocuts, who depicted regional and historic scenes from Central New York, and specifically, Geneva.  He was a professor of art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, and served as the editor for American Artist Magazine for many years. His original woodcuts and prints are collected by museums throughout the United States.
This 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 - inch print is made from a Kent woodcut for the 1953 National bank of Geneva promotional calendar. It comes with the original envelope with Kent's own historical account of the scene depicted. The print, entitled The Bogert Press in 1817 depicts early Geneva newspaper publisher, James Bogert, at his printing press in 479 South Main Street, Geneva, NY.
CONDITION:   The paper has an ivory hue, partly from age, partly because it was never pure white. It is unbent, in excellent condition, and the easel-back stand and wall hanger were never folded or touched. The 12-month paper calendar is pristine, and obviously never used. The envelope has very minor wrinkling near the V-fold, and the printed historical notes are clear and easy to read.
This set should be framed behind archival glass. At 66 years old it is currently stored in an archive-friendly environment.
