18th-19thC American Hand Carved Sailor Made Longboat Miniature Maritime Folk Art
18th - 19th C. Rare American Hand Carved Sailor Made Longboat Miniature
We are offering a rare, maritime folk art piece.
A beautifully carved, Late 18th to Early 19th Century Sailor Made Longboat.
The amazing miniature's hull is carved of one piece, with the board seats attached (thwarts).
The two stars, on the hull and the cockpit, point to this ship being modeled after an Admirals longboat.
The back of this miniature boat probably had a rudder or a flag.
The white paint was added on later, and you can still see the original varnish and gilding on the top portion.
You can make out craquelure on the original varnish from it's age.
This type of late 18th to early 19th century longboat was
part of the equipment of larger ships, and were used in naval combat as dispatches.
This was modeled after a longboat that would have accompanied a ship through
historical sea battles in the Revolutionary War through the War of 1812.
Along with the boat comes two oars, one of which is missing the blade.
Approx. Dimensions:
Length: 10 1/8"
